Wannabe Pundits
A favorite of James Taranto is his section called 'wannabe pundits' where he quotes part of an article and asks you to guess what it is about.
Philadelphia: Rev. Jeremiah Wright was born in Philadelphia. Even if, like me, you think many of Wright's remarks are being lifted out of context for political purposes, now would be an excellent time for him to meditate in a remote monastery in Nepal for the remainder of the year. Example of context: attack ads show Wright saying only "God damn America." Deleted is the full quote, "God damn America for treating its citizens as less than human." The full quote isn't extremism, just an overblown choice of words. Steven Waldman, author of the must-read new book "Founding Faith," about the religious values of the Framers, recently noted, "Many of the Framers believed God would either bless or condemn the new nation based on its moral behavior, and so would have found perfectly fitting a warning that God would damn the country for wickedness."*
Now guess what the article is about.

Did you guess ... the NFL Draft? Why not?

(*the 'context' of the quote by Rev. Wright is his sermon, not just his sentence. So in bitching about context and 'lack of it', the writer does the same thing he complains about)

Soccer & Bikes
wham:a different cornerImage from FlickrSoccer game today was 7-1 in lil bit's favor :) She scored another goal but I didn't get video (was using the cell phone and ran out of room); she knocked it off the defender into the goal.

I slept when we got home (midnights) and came out to find this:
I'm very proud! (gotta goto work now)

Sportsmanship
I've been looking for a video of this all day. Basically a girl blows out her knee after hitting a home-run but before running the bases...

Soccer
A couple of videos from this weekends soccer game. We lost 5-2, but lil bit played well.

Thought she had that one, she broke away smooth but was blocked at the goal.

Payback! :) Her 4th goal of the year. I missed goals 2 & 3 :(

Sports for the week(end)
Had a softball game this week and we won 13-3 in 5 innings. Lil bit was on the camera so the clips were spotty, but there's one of me coaching 3rd just as we change innings:(#69 [yes it probably was perverted once upon a time, now it's simply tradition that I have that number])
After that, lil bit took the training wheels of her bike (sniffle) and tried to learn to ride. She hasn't gotten it yet, but she will (best vid I have of it, not her best ride though)
Finally we had soccer this morning. I didn't get to stay but until half time so I didn't get any good vids. I got one of her making a good block. We left and it was 3-2 (them) just after the half. Lil bit called and told me she scored 2 goals!!! and had 2 more blocks and got defensive player of the game!
Next week I have to work on soccer day, so hopefully someone else can film. We do play ball again this week, so maybe something from that too.

Golf
Tiger is human again this week after coming in 5th at the CA Championship. Of course he was 5 down going into Monday's finish (rain) and only lost by 2 strokes, so it's not like he had no shot.

Normally it isn't good for a sport to have one dominate person/team and no legitimate rivalry to keep up interest and ESPN has been trying for a few years to make the Tiger/Mickleson a real one to no avail. Somehow though, this isn't needed in golf. Tiger is dominate in a way no other sports person is and instead of turning off viewers and fans, it has energized the sport.

Did anyone really think Tiger would have a perfect year? Some probably did, but not me; the only thing Tiger needs to do and wants to do is win the big 4.

Coaching III / Death of a Giant
Seems that Rich Rodriguez has changed his mind once again and turned down the Alabama offer and decided to stay at West Virginia. Seems WVU ponied up some more money and years and Rich decided he really liked it there. (Alabama was offering $2mil a year for 6 years)

Rodriguez denies 'Bama, will return to Morgantown

Associated Press
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- West Virginia coach Rich Rodriguez turned down Alabama on Friday, telling his players that he'll be back for his sixth season with the Mountaineers.
A loud applause could be heard from inside the Milan Puskar Center at Mountaineer Field after Rodriguez told his team he would be staying at his alma mater.

"Obviously I'm very excited to stay here and I plan on being here a long time," Rodriguez said later at a news conference. "We've done some pretty good things over the last five years or so. We're not done yet. We're going to continue to grow."
Rodriguez head coaching career
Rich Rodriguez
Rodriguez
Rich Rodriguez has guided West Virginia to three Big East championships and four straight New Year's Day Bowl games, including the 2007 Toyota Gator Bowl vs. Georgia Tech.

COACHING RECORD:
With West Virginia: 49-24 (2001-present)
With Glenville State (Div. II):
With Salem (Div. II): 2-8 (1988) 43-26-2 (1990-96)

Rodriguez will receive a two-year contract extension through the 2014 season from West Virginia. Other details of the deal were not immediately released.

"There weren't many reasons not to go. It's all about the reasons for staying," Rodriguez said. "I'm biased, this is my school. I think it's a great place to raise a family. We've always had a great athletic tradition."

Seems like Alabama is still searching for a coach. I still think they should go after Norm Chow, especially since NC State already got a coach.

ESPN reports that Jose Uribe (ex-SF Giants shortstop) died when his SUV crashed. Jose wasJose Uribe from the Dominican Republic and is survived by his wife, Wendy Guerrero, and at least 14 children.

Jose was 47 years old. Rest in Peace.

Alabama Coaching
ESPN reports that Alabama has sign Rich Rodriguez as their new coach. No details online atm (saw the report briefly on sportscenter).

According to the website no deal has been made yet. But the report on Sportscenter was after the report was posted on ESPN.com so no clue here. If he's signed, then good news to the Crimson Tide fans out there. Rodriguez is a great coach, just wondering now if he'll try his spread offense at Bama or convert to a more traditional offense (ala Meyer at Florida).

Da Boyz
23 20

Dallas (8-4) now leads the NFC East by 2 games after dispatching the pesky Giants (6-6). It was the cowboys 4th win in the last 5 and the g-men's 4th loss in a row.

This game was especially gratifying for me, since my little brother is a big NY fan and I'm a big Dallas fan ;)

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -- In an NFC where nobody stands out, the Dallas Cowboys are beginning to pass for a dominant team.

Newly signed kicker Martin Gramatica booted a 46-yard field goal with 1 second left to give the Cowboys a 23-20 win over the New York Giants and a two-game lead in the NFC East. Gramatica's winning kick went straight through the uprights with plenty of power, more than making up for his wide-right miss from 44 yards to end the Cowboys' opening drive. (link)
Now the Boyz can set their sites on catching the Bears for #1 in the NFC for the playoffs. [Amazing what a change a QB can do, a friend and I have been wishing for a Romo switch since the last game of last season, since they were already out of the playoffs, why didn't Parcells give it to Romo in the Rams game?]

Florida SEC Champs

Florida Gators Florida beats Arkansas by 10. Now it's up to the pollsters and the computers to decide between Michigan and Florida.

It would help kill the BCS quicker if Michigan goes, but it would be 'right' if Florida went.

Once upon a time, losses mattered (when you had them) and you could NEVER have one at the end of the season and survive. Until the BCS (yes Florida lost to FSU and then went on to play for the title in '96, but other people lost to put Florida there, they didn't lose and STAY 2nd).

I truly think Florida can and will beat Ohio State (if they go). We already know that Michigan can't beat OSU. They lost already to them and it should have been by 11 (phantom pass interference calls shouldn't count).

Tomorrow will be a busy day with the bowls all being decided. I'll try to post some on that. Lots of news happening today too, but I'm in 'football' mode, so I've been reading alot but not posting (heh). I start midnights tomorrow night, so not sure on the posting, but if it's slow at work, I may get some late night posts in. (link)

BCS Implications

USC TrojansThe dream ends.

UCLA has beaten USC 13-9 in California today to end USC's chances of 3 straight Championship games. Now it will be between Michigan and Florida (winning) to play Ohio State.

UCLA's defense played great and stymied the Trojan offense all day. The Bruins offense didn't play well, but played just good enough to get the job done.

At halftime Florida leads Arkansas 17-7 in the SEC Championship. If they win, they'll have a legitimate argument for playing OSU.

It rained alot at Jacksonville. Neither offense could really get on track and both defenses played good enough to win. But, Wake Forest is in the BCS (yes Wake) for the first time with a 9-6 hard fought win.

Wake went 11-2 this year after losing their top running back and top quaterback to injury early in the year. It helped that they played in the ACC this year (which was way down). No matter the why or how, Wake will be in the Orange bowl representing the ACC.

Congratulations to Wake Forest and all the Deamon Deacon fans out there. Great season and one big game left to go. No matter what happens in the Orange bowl, they have a championship trophy to take back home!(link)

Saturday Football
No. 2 USC (10-1) at UCLA (6-5)
Pasadena, CA
4:30 PM ET
TheBruins won eight straight from 1991-98. The Trojans have won the lastseven. If eight was enough for UCLA, expect USC to at least equal thatmark.

No. 4 Florida (11-1) vs No. 8 Arkansas (10-2)
Atlanta, GA
6:00 PM ET CBS
The Gators rank fourth nationally against the run. The Hogs rank fourth nationally in rushing. Get ready for some collisions.

No. 13 Rutgers (10-1) at No. 15 West Virginia (9-2)
Morgantown, WV
7:45 PM ET
Getting a Big East title clinching win won't be easy, the Scarlet Knights are 0-14 all-time in Morgantown.

Also the Big 12 championship, the ACC championship and Hawaii going for the single season TD record (54) against Brittany's favorite team (Oregon State Beavers).

Should be an exciting day for football, the USC-UCLA matchup will determine who plays Ohio State in the title game. USC wins, they are in; if they get upset, then Florida or Michigan will play. [if Florida wins] The Florida/Arkansas game will be fun to watch. Arkansas runs like nobodies business, Florida stops the run.

My picks: USC by 15, Florida by 7, Rutgers by 2, Nebraska by 2 and Hawaii by 12
