Super Bowl XLII
ha ha haha ha!

The Patriots were 18-0 going in and unstoppable, the Giants were lucky to be there. All the 'experts' picked the Pats and said NY had to play nearly perfect to even get close...

17-14 was the final score, against the highest scoring team in NFL history, the Giants held them to 2 touchdowns. Unless you were a Patriot fan or loved high scores, this was a great game to watch.

BCS
Ohio State has heard all year how they aren't good enough to beat an SEC school. After the pasting they got last year from Florida, they had to endure the media, the fans and probably their families expecting them to fail.

That made them mad. They came into this championship game with a chip on their shoulder and the backing of almost the entire ESPN staff (not that matters much, ESPN picked them last year too). They brought the #1 rated defense in all football and 'beanie' wells, the running back who made Michigan go away. They were ready to take it all.

LSU 'backed' into the game, some even say didn't deserve to be there (Oklahoma, USC, Georgia certainly would say it), much like Florida last year. ESPN hyped up the fact that LSU was playing basically a home game (Lee Corso ran hard with this, pumping up the Buckeyes) and was too 'fast' for OSU. LSU had the 3rd ranked defense, but lately they had given up quite a few yards and points to some 'low' competition.

The game kicked off and less than a minute and a half in, OSU had a 7 point lead ...

NEW ORLEANS -- Through an entire season of upsets and upheaval, teams moved in and out of the top of the polls as if it were a fleabag motel instead of the Ritz-Carlton. No one stayed long, and the ones that claimed they belonged didn't exactly look the part.

Until the last night of the season, that is. On the last night of the season, college football found an occupant for its penthouse.

For the second time in five years, the Tigers are holding the crystal football.
The LSU Tigers are a dominant champion. They are a deserving champion. And as a fitting end to a season that never followed its script, they are college football's first two-loss champion.

LSU rolled over Ohio State 38-24 in the BCS Championship Game, becoming not only the first two-loss champion but the first two-time champion in the 10-year history of the BCS. That the Tigers managed to achieve both distinctions captures the uneven nature of their season, in which they lost two games in triple overtime and won three others in the final 90 seconds of regulation.

There would be no such thrills Monday night because LSU cut way down on its mistakes. The team that finished the season 118th in the nation in penalties per game (8.7) committed only four in the last, most important game. The Tigers (12-2) committed only one turnover. Ohio State (11-2), the team known for not beating itself, committed seven and three, respectively.

ESPN
It was a great game and a needed one ;) that win was the difference between being tied for 4th and tied for 1st in the 'pool'.

NFL
Some good games over the weekend. My brother's favorite team, my mother's favorite, my dad's favorite and my favorite team are in.

The Tennessee Titans (dad) lost a good game to San Diego. Just like the last time the two teams played, SD took control in the second half and the Titans 'rolled over' and let them.

The NY Giants (brother) totally beat up on the Tampa Bay Bucs. NY plays Dallas (mine) next week for the 3rd time this season (with Dallas taking the first 2) in what should be a great game.

[Seattle beat Washington and will play Green Bay (mother) next week / Jacksonville beat Pittsburgh and will play New England]

Division II Championship
Didn't get to goto the game today as I had to sleep (working midnights) and then goto lil bit's birthday party :)

FLORENCE, Ala. -- Michael Terry scored a touchdown with 22 seconds left as Valdosta State beat Northwest Missouri State, 25-20, Saturday for the Division II championship, the Bearcats' third consecutive title-game loss.

Terry's 1-yard TD run capped an eight-play, 37-yard drive sparked by Willie Copeland's four straight completions for 27 yards. Valdosta (13-1) overcame a 14-3 halftime deficit as

Northwest Missouri finished the season 12-2.

"I don't know if words can describe the disappointment that I feel for these guys," Bearcats coach Mel Tjeerdsma said. "They've done a great job and we've had a great run. They got beat by a very good football team."

Valdosta State's William Montford intercepted a desperation pass by Joel Osborn with 16 seconds left to preserve the win, and Blazers fans swarmed the field, soggy after a cold rainstorm blew through.

Decent game, not a lot of production from UT's offense.

Ainge gave the game away and then gave away the comeback... [ESPN]

update: forgot the score (doh) 21-14 LSU ;(

UT vs UK (III)
Great game (if you don't have a heart condition).

Kentucky should have won it in OT #2 but the field goal was blocked. In the 4th OT Tennessee scored and got the 2 point. Kentucky scored and missed the 2 point.

52-50 Tennessee! EMB: I tried to call you, was a great game, hope you got to watch it.

UT vs UK (half time)
Tennessee 24
Kentucky 7

Halfway through the game and it's looking like the streak will reach 23 in a row for Tennessee. The offense is moving at will (one tipped interception that resulted in nothing) and the defense is playing inspired (intercepted Woodson next play after the Ainge Int.). If Kentucky doesn't find some 'fire' in the locker room, this game may get out of hand.

Don't worry EMB, they still get to go to a bowl ;)

SEC Roundup
Ok, Tennessee came back to beat Vandy (1 win away from the SEC Championship now and Vandy still 1 win from boal contention); Georgia came back to beat Kentucky, LSU handled Ole Miss, Arkansas had an easy day with Mississippi State and Florida destroyed FAU (Tebow, the front-runner for the heisman now, had his 20th rushing TD on the year, 1st major college player with 20 rushing and 20 passing td's).

Game of the day (heh)

No words for this one, just the link Ala 14 - ULM 21

SEC Roundup
Tennessee routs Louisiana-LaFayette 59-7

Georgia gives up a length-of-the-field touchdown in the final minute but wins 44-34 over Troy

Ole Miss starts strong but has to hold on versus NW State 38-31

Tennessee Tech moves the ball well, but turnovers help Auburn rout them 35-3

South Carolina pulled out all the tricks they could, but couldn't stop the run against Arkansas and lose 36-48

Florida makes Vandy look like.. well Vandy 49-22

Game of the day: #3 LSU at #17 Alabama

This game went back and forth. LSU stormed out to a 17-3 lead and looked like they were in control. Alabama couldn't run and couldn't throw, but LSU couldn't hold onto the ball. Alabama came back and took the lead late only to see LSU drive down to tie it with less than 2 minutes to go.

Alabama got the ball back and on a drop back pass, Wilson is sacked and fumbles; LSU recovers at the 2 yard line and scores on the next play for a 41-34 lead.

Alabama got the ball back with time left, but on fourth and 10 Wilson can't complete the pass and LSU wins and keeps their BCS hopes alive (boosted by the fact that #2 BC lost to FSU)

SEC Roundup
Tennessee vs South Carolina:
The first half was all Tennessee, they moved the ball at will and stopped everything SC tried to do. One play Tennessee's defense wasn't even on the field and SC failed to get a first down (j/k). A methodical offense and swarming defense led to a 21-0 Tennessee lead at the half.

The second half, both teams switched. South Carolina changed QB's and moved the ball with abandon, Tennessee's defense couldn't slow them down and the offense sputtered. One drive that wasn't a 3 and out until late (that drive stalled after a failed fourth down conversion).

Two years ago, SC won for the only time in Neyland stadium on a 49 yard field goal. Last night they scored 3 touchdowns to tie it up and then with 1:24 left nailed a, yep you guessed it, 49 yard field goal for a 24-21 lead.

On the ensuing kickoff, Tennessee's LaMarcus Coker returned it to the 49 on a great cutback run. With around 1:18 left, Tennessee drove to the 18 yard line with :28 to go. With time enough to go for the win instead of the tie; Ainge backed up to pass and was sacked and fumbled. Tennessee recovered and had to spike the ball to stop the clock at :09 (no time-outs left) for a field goal try to tie. The try was (very) wide left but there was a false start on UT and the play didn't count (thank goodness). Backed up 5 yards now it was a 48 yarder (47 yards was the kickers long) and the kick was true. Overtime! In OT UT got the ball first, bogged down and kicked another field goal for a 27-24 lead. SC got the ball and couldn't do anything (unusually) and brought in their reliable kicker for a cheap 41 yarder. He missed it BADLY and UT wins!
Auburn vs Ole Miss:
Both offenses are terrible but Auburn's defense is awesome. It showed in a 17-3 win by the Tigers.
Georgia vs Florida (World's Greatest Outdoor Cocktail Party):
Florida, even with 2 SEC losses entered the day controlling their own destiny in the East. Win out and they go to the championship game. Georgia had lost 15 of the last 17 to UF and today looked like just another loss.

Something funny happened on the way to the game. Georgia came out running and never stopped. With Tebow (UF QB) hurt, Georgia's defense held him to -15 yards rushing (he did have 2 TD's) and the Florida defense played like it was wearing UT jerseys (heh). In the end, it was too much Moroney from Georgia (188 yards, 3 TD's) and a 42-30 beatdown for UF at the hands of Georgia.
Vanderbilt vs Miami (OH):
Vandy hasn't been to a bowl game since '82 I think. To get to one you have to get 6 wins in a year. They entered this game with 4 (and a difficult schedule after) so winning this one was a must. After letting Miami get back into it in the first half, Vandy pulled away in the second half for a 24-13 win and one step closer to that elusive bowl berth.
Arkansas vs Florida International:
This game shouldn't have been competitive and wasn't. Arkansas could have brought cheerleaders in and still ran the ball. A 58-10 pasting looks good on your stat sheet.
Kentucky vs Mississippi State:
Kentucky is already bowl eligible but has dreams of the SEC East (after their National title hopes were crushed in the close loss to UF last week). Mississippi State has been bad for a long time and with 4 wins, stood just 2 wins from a bowl berth (unthinkable at the beginning of the year).

This game was a terrible game if you were a KY fan (hey EMB) or even if you just pull for them. Miss. St. moved the ball at will and scored the 31-14 upset by making KY turn the ball over 6 times (including 3 interceptions from the once heisman touted QB at KY).

#1 no more
The University of Kentucky hasn't beat a #1 ranked team since 1964. That streak ended today. #17 UK knocked off #1 LSU 43 to 37. Despite doing their best to help LSU win. Turnovers, interceptions, and penalties including a delay of game penalty in the 3rd overtime. It's a good time in the Bluegrass tonight.

More info and stats.

Next week, Univeristy of Florida.

SEC Roundup
LSU and Florida play tonight (7:30 central on CBS) and Arkansas is playing Chattanooga right now.

Kentucky and South Carolina played Thursday night; it was a chance for Kentucky to solidify it's top-10 ranking and Woodson's heisman hopes. In the end, both the ranking and the hopes were dashed.

Auburn and Vandy played the early game. I thought this would be a good game, Auburn coming off the stunning win at Florida last week and Vandy playing well; but it turned into a one-team show with AU dominating from start to finish and Vandy looking like the Vandy of old.

Mississippi and Mississippi State had easy games against La. Tech and UAB respectively. Although Miss. State had to come from behind in the last quarter.

Alabama played Houston and won fairly easily. The score was closer than I assume the game was (not on 'free' tv) but if you took Houston and the 10 points, you're a winner. [no recap at post time]

Game of the day was Tennessee and Georgia at Neyland stadium. Georgia came in ranked #12 and the UT defense had been torched all year. Perfect recipe for a blowout ... by Tennessee :) With apologies to Mary Katherine Hamm of Townhall.com, it was a great game.

SEC Roundup
Tennessee got off it's rocker and put away Arkansas State; LSU played championship type football and beat South Carolina; Florida escaped with a win against a game Ole Miss squad; Auburn looked destined to go down and roared back to crush New Mexico State.

Kentucky was outplayed for 3 quarters, luckily they play 4. The fourth was all Ky all the time as they beat Arkansas. Georgia gave up a 10 point lead to Alabama only to win it on their first play of OT. Mississippi State cruised over lowly Gardner-Webb.

I'll give EMB the chance to crow about Kentucky if he wants :) And sorry to say, I don't know who Thai's favorite team is ;(

University of Kentucky Football

Finding the right baseball bats or the correct basketball shoes may not seem that big a deal to you, but surely it does matter to your eleven year old that his golf carts are being filled with the right golf equipment. The wrong type of golf clubs is more than enough to put them off golf and you might as well be buying lacrosse equipment for the rest of your life.

For the first time since 1977 UK has beaten a top 10 team. Earlier tonight, the Wildcats pulled an upset win on instate rivals, the University of Louisville. Thanks to a touchdown pass from Woodson to Johnson with only 28 seconds remaining. Kentucky's defense then stopped a last second drive by Louisville to end the game with a final score of 40-34.

Also, Andre Woodson broke the SEC record for most passes without an interception with 257 and counting.

This is the first time in years that I thought UK had a chance at beating Louisville going into the game. Then after seeing a few minutes of the 1st quarter, it looked like UK was really psyched up and out for the kill.

I am looking forward to Tennessee. :)

Mid-game update:

I stated early that the only way Auburn avoids upset #2 is to NOT.LET.COX.THROW.

Shortly after, interception returned for TD Miss. State up 10-0....

now, interception again and Miss. St is driving.

To all the Auburn fans out there, what's it going to take for Cox to sit on the bench?

And Go Vols! Rough game today in the Swamp ><

SEC Roundup
(24)Tennessee 39, Southern Miss 19
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- A trio of Tennessee wide receivers combine for 241 yards and two touchdowns.

Robert Meachem, Jayson Swain and Bret Smith? They're gone. The new trio of Austin Rogers, Lucas Taylor and Josh Briscoe had a breakout game against Southern Mississippi.

Erik Ainge threw a touchdown pass a piece to Rogers and Briscoe, Arian Foster ran for two scores and No. 24 Tennessee defeated Southern Miss 39-19 Saturday night.

"The potential has always been there, so we aren't shocked that they're where they're supposed to be every time," Ainge said about his new top pass catchers.
I didn't get to watch this one (pay-per-view) but it looked like the defense finally started playing in the 2nd half. Big game @ Florida next week though.

(2)LSU 48, (9)Victim Tech 7
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) -- LSU didn't need any small-school sacrificial lambs on its early season schedule to post a couple gaudy blowouts.

No. 9 Virginia Tech couldn't stop the second-ranked Tigers any more than some pushover.

LSU (2-0) scored on four of its first five possessions and cruised to a 48-7 victory over the uncharacteristically hapless Hokies (1-1) on Saturday night.

Jacob Lester and Keiland Williams each scored two touchdowns and LSU's menacing defense drove Virginia Tech starting quarterback Sean Glennon from the game midway through the second quarter.

Williams highlighted an overwhelming first half for the Tigers with a career-long 67-yard run for a touchdown.
This game wasn't as close as the score (yes, you read that right). LSU looked like a team that is shooting for a championship this year while Va Tech looked like they wanted to be anywhere else.

Alabama 24, Vanderbilt 10
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Terry Grant ran 24 times for 173 yards and two touchdowns, and Alabama made Nick Saban the latest coach to oversee the Crimson Tide's dominance of Vanderbilt with a 24-10 victory Saturday.

Leigh Tiffin kicked three field goals, and Alabama (2-0) won its Southeastern Conference opener with a 20th straight victory in a series it now leads 60-19-4. The Tide improved to 18-3-1 when opening SEC play against the Commodores (1-1, 0-1).

With 18 returning starters, the Commodores came in with what looked like their best chance to defeat Alabama on their home field since 1969 when they last beat the Tide in Nashville.
This was a good game for most of the 1st half. Vanderbilt had it's chances early, but after their starting QB got hurt, it was all but over. Give credit to Alabama also, they played with their usual workmanlike effort and overwhelmed a 'game' Vandy squad.

South Carolina 16, (11)Georgia 12
ATHENS, Ga. (AP) -- Steve Spurrier tried to downplay his latest win over Georgia. Of course, he couldn't resist one little dig at the Bulldogs.

"I guess I have won two out of three here," the ol' ball coach said Saturday night, clearly savoring another victory between the hedges.

Spurrier, who beat the Bulldogs regularly while at Florida, guided South Carolina to a 16-12 upset of No. 11 Georgia that may indicate the Gamecocks are finally ready to contend for their first Southeastern Conference title.
S.C. dominated this game. If their offense would have played better this would have been a blowout. Georgia managed just 4 field goals and looked anemic all game long. Spurrier finally beat UGA with SC (he owned them at Florida).

(4)Florida 59, Troy 31
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) -- No. 4 Florida was nearly perfect early and sloppy late.

Tim Tebow threw three touchdown passes, ran for two more scores and led the defending national champion Gators to a 59-31 victory against Troy on Saturday night.

Florida scored on all seven possessions in the first half, moving the ball with relative ease against Troy's soft zone.

The Trojans (0-2) refused to give the Gators (2-0) anything deep, keeping two safeties well back and prompting Tebow to throw underneath.
Another game not on TV in my area (that's what happens when you play 'little' schools) so I can't tell you much on how Troy managed to get 31 points. I know they got 7 on Florida's starting defense, but not sure who was playing on the last 24 that the Trojans put up. Florida probably was looking ahead a bit in the 2nd half to the upcoming game with Tennessee.

Kentucky 56, Kent State 20
LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) -- John Conner had two of Kentucky's six rushing TDs -- the first two of his career -- as the Wildcats' offense overcame their porous rushing defense to defeat Kent State 56-20 Saturday night.

Conner scored on Kentucky's opening drives of both halves, including a 16-yard scamper four minutes after halftime that gave the Wildcats (2-0) the lead for good. Coming into the game, Conner had only two other carries in his career.

Tony Dixon, Andre Woodson, Alfonso Smith and Derrick Locke each added TD runs, Locke's from 67 yards out on just his second career carry. Kentucky racked up 266 rushing yards, but Kent State did even better on the ground.
Yes it was Kent State, but this is a Kentucky team that went to a bowl last season and has hopes of contending in the East this year. Didn't get to watch (it's still Kentucky) but from score updates, the offense is definitely clicking in KY.

Mississippi St. 38, Tulane 17
NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- Michael Henig passed for one touchdown and ran for another and Mississippi State outscored Tulane 21-0 in the second half on its way to a 38-17 victory Saturday night in the Superdome.
Good win for the Bulldogs.

Missouri 38, Mississippi 25
OXFORD, Miss. (AP) -- Chase Daniel accounted for a career-high 396 total yards and threw five touchdowns passes Saturday as Missouri sprinted to a 28-point lead over Mississippi then held on for a 38-25 win.

It was the eighth time in the last nine games that Daniel had at least 309 total yards. He faced little pressure as he masterfully ran the spread offense and picked apart the Ole Miss (1-1) defense in the first 35 minutes.

Rebels running back BenJarvus Green-Ellis had a career game with 226 yards rushing.
If you had Mississippi and the points, please pay before you leave.

South Florida 26, (17)Auburn 23 (OT)
AUBURN, Ala. -- Jessie Hester Jr. caught a 14-yard touchdown pass from Matt Grothe to lift South Florida to a 26-23 overtime win over No. 17 Auburn Saturday night, another impressive upset for the Bulls.

Auburn freshman Wes Byrum made a 39-yard field goal to start overtime and then Grothe took over. He ran three times, including a sneak on fourth-and-1. Then, on the next play he hit Hester behind the defense for the game-winner.

South Florida (2-0), which had pulled off upsets of highly ranked West Virginia and Louisville in the past two seasons, won for the first time in five tries against Southeastern Conference teams.
USF looked terrible in this game. They got 5 turnovers from Auburn and couldn't convert them to points. Yet after all that, they managed to tie the game up in the final minute (their kicker was 2-6, yes 2) and won the game on a sweet pass in OT. If you like Auburn there's good news and bad news. Good news is this game won't hurt you in the conference. Bad news is, your team sucks.

Update: Story per ESPN reports substance abuse, but no details - [here]

Not a good word out of Tennessee for football:
Tennessee RB Coker Suspended Indefinitely for Unspecified Reason
Aug 7, 8:20 PM (ET) Email this Story

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -Tennessee tailback LaMarcus Coker, the team's leading rusher last season, has been suspended indefinitely.

Coach Phillip Fulmer did not specify Tuesday what Coker had done to earn the penalty.

"He must fulfill some obligations to the program and to me before he can return," Fulmer read from a prepared statement after practice. "I have tried, as has the administration, to work with him, but at this time he must help himself."

The sophomore led the Vols with 696 rushing yards his freshman year, even though he was sidelined for two games by an injured knee. He was competing for time with junior Arian Foster and sophomore Montario Hardesty.

Coker, who had a pair of touchdown runs for more than 80 yards each last season, was suspended for several practices last December for undisclosed reasons. (link)

With the way Hardesty runs, Coker didn't need to do anything to jeopardize his starting role. Of course we don't know what he did, but if it's significant enough for this, I hope he gets help to work it out.

The young man's life and well-being are more important than just what he can do on the field; but you're off-the-field actions will jump up and bite you (see Pacman Jones).

RIP
One of the greatest football coaches of all-time has passed away:

Former Grambling Coach Eddie Robinson Dies
Apr 4, 8:33 AM (ET) Email this Story

By MARY FOSTER

RUSTON, La. (AP) -Eddie Robinson, who sent more than 200 players to the NFL and won 408 games during a 57-year career, has died. He was 88.

Super Bowl MVP quarterback Doug Williams, one of Robinson's former players, said the former Grambling State University coach died shortly before midnight on Tuesday. Robinson had been admitted to Lincoln General Hospital on Tuesday afternoon.

"For the Grambling family this is a very emotional time," Williams said Wednesday. "But I'm thinking about Eddie Robinson the man, not in today-time, but in the day and what he meant to me and to so many people."

Robinson's career spanned 11 presidents, several wars and the civil-rights movement.

His older records were what people remembered: in 57 years, Robinson set the standard for victories, going 408-165-15. John Gagliardi of St. John's, Minn., passed Robinson and has 443 wins. (link)

Prayers go out to all the family/friends of Coach Robinson.

WHY ISN"T ART MONK IN THE HOF ???!!!!!!!
I am still extremely upset by the NFL Hall of Fame (HOF) selections for this year. Not so much by who made it in ... but by who DIDN'T.

Art Monk ... once again was snubbed by a bunch of fat newspaper columnists who probably never strapped on football pads in their entire lives.

Art Monk - WHO RETIRED AS THE NFL's ALL TIME LEADER IN RECEPTIONS as well as in the top 5 of all major receiving categories - was ONCE AGAIN, left out of the HOF.

Why?? Why was this man, who teammates nicknamed "Money" (because they knew that whatever the circumstance - Monk would come down with the ball), kept out of the HOF?

I'm still scratching my head on this one.

While I detest Michael Irvin as a person I think he had the #'s to make it in...

HOWEVER... if Irvin was to be let in eventually...Monk should've gone first IMHO.

Lets look at the stats shall we?

Michael Irvin career stats

750 receptions - 20th all time
11904 receiving yards - 14th all time
15.9 yards per catch
65 touchdowns - 37th all time
3 Super bowl rings
5 time Pro Bowler

Art Monk career stats

940 receptions - 6th all time (190 more than Irvin)
12721 receiving yards - 11th all time (817 more than Irvin)
13.5 yards per catch - (2.4 less than Irvin)
68 career touchdowns - 30th all time (3 more than Irvin)
3 Super Bowl rings
3 time Pro Bowler

Now one the typical arguments against Monk getting in are that Monk was a product of the system he played in.

Really?

No such arguments were used against Irvin however.

How many HOF QB's threw to Monk ? Do the names Thiesmann, Williams, Schroeder or Rypien show up on a bust in Canton? Didn't think so...

How many HOF QB's threw to Irvin? Troy Aikman - a first ballot HOF inductee

How many HOF RB's played with each player? 1 each - Emmitt Smith with Irvin and John Riggins with Monk.... BUT Riggins played only a few of Monk's seasons with him where-as Smith ( THE NFL'S ALL TIME LEADING RUSHER !!!) continued to play long after Irvin hung his cleats up.

How many great WR's also played on the same team and demanded the ball more ?

Irvin = NONE. Whereas Monk also played with Gary Clark who lined up outside and was used to stretch defenses.

Now - you might say;

"Really Thai? Gary Clark was good?? "

MMHMMMM...he was. And he took recptions. yards and TD's from Monk.

Anyone know what Gary Clark's career NFL #'s are?

699 receptions
10856 yds
65 TD's

Now lets bring up Irvin's #'s again and compare Clark side by side...

Irvin: 750 rec, 11904 yds, 65 TD
Clark: 699 rec, 10856 yds, 65 TD

So Clark had a HOF career as well... why hasn't he been included as a HOF candidate yet?? I know why (it is anti-Redskin bias amongst sportwriters like "Dr. Z")

Lets add in that towards the end of Monk's career he also played alongside Ricky Sanders AND Clark.

While those guys racked up the stats and the glamor, Monk simply piled up 3rd down catches that extended drives and led us to 3 Super Bowl victories. Never once did Monk bitch about not getting more catches or TDs (as Irvin did REPEATEDLY and admitted he switched places on a play with Alvin Harper in a playoff game so he could get a "highlight play"), and he always blocked like an extra TE (so effectively that opposing players were amazed at how good a blocker a WR could be).

Seems like both teams had "systems" but think of the fact that Monk didn't have a HOF QB or the NFL's All-Time leading rusher helping him out.

Another knock was that he wasn't the leading receiver on his team;

I call BS on this one !!!

Another person ( I forget where) said this;

"He led the Redskins in receptions in 1980, 1981, 1982, 1984, 1985, 1989, and 1991. He led the team in receiving yards in 1980, 1981, 1984, 1985. He was not far behind Ricky Sanders or Gary Clark in most other years. He was not a selfish player who asked for the ball on every play, and he played alongside other great receivers, yet he still led his team in receptions for most of a decade"

Lets take a look at the #'s shall we?

1980 - Monk led the team in receptions (1)
1981 - Monk led the team in receptions (2)
1982 - Monk led the team in receptions (3)
1983 - Missed four games, second on the team in receptions
1984 - Monk led the team in receptions (4)
1985 - Monk led the team in receptions (5)
1986 - Second in the team in receptions, Monk had 73, Clark had 74
1987 - Strike season & missed a few games to injury, second on the team in receptions
1988 - Second on the team in receptions again by one catch, Sanders had 73, Monk 72
1989 - Monk led the team in receptions (6)
1990 - Second on the team in receptions to Clark (75 to 68)
1991 - Monk led the team in receptions (7)
1992 - Second on the team in receptions to Clark at the age of 35
1993 - Second on the team in receptions to Sanders at the age of 36
1994 - At the age of 37, moves to the Jets, second on the team in receptions
1995 - At the age of 38, only plays in three games.

Remember - not until 1990 (when Monk was 33) did Clark start to outperform Monk and then Monk (at age 34) still led the team in receptions the year after.

When you examine Ricky Sanders and Clark's #'s - you'll see that after they left Washington their performance dropped considerably. I have no doubts that the reason was that they didn't have a "Money" , that opposing teams needed to account for, allowing them to get open deep like they did in Washington.

So much for the myth about Monk not being the best WR on his team.

I have heard Monk be called a pioneer - this description is apt.

Monk played for so long that people forgot what the NFL was like when he joined.

Monk caught 106 passes when NOONE was doing it. I mean NOONE. The previous record was 93. He obliterated it. Was this a flash in the pan?? Hardly... The next year Monk had 91 receptions (he was 2nd in the NFL) the nearest receiver in 3rd place didn't even have 80.

His record of 106 in a season stood until 1992 when Sterling Sharpe caught 108 (only 2 more). But when Sharpe broke his record the game had changed in a fundtamental way to allow more receptions and more yards by WR's( the pass interference rules had been changed, changes had been made about hitting and holding recievers and protecting QB's., etc..). So not only did Monk get his #'s and end up in the top-5 in all major categories and end his career with the most receptions and most consecutive games with a reception - he did so mostly in an era where it was tougher to get those flashy #'s. Unlike Irvin and others who got their #'s in an era when it was easier to do so. Monk's 940 receptions was so far and above what other WR's could even hope to achieve that it took Jerry Rice (a sure first ballot HOF'er) to break it

A walkthrough on the evolution of the WR position can be found here...

The next argument these biased sportswriters use is his lack of Pro Bowls

Really???

They want to hang their hat on the fact that a popularity contest (which is the Pro Bowl) should decide who was the better WR??

Steve Largent went to a total of 3 Pro Bowls - but he's in the HOF. How many Superbowl rings did Steve earn?

Lets take a look at 4 years where Monk got robbed out of a Pro Bowl...

1981 Pro Bowl Roster
Dwight Clark (SFO) 85-1105-4
Alfred Jenkins (ATL) 70-1358-13
James Lofton (GRB) 71-1294-8
Ahmad Rashad (MIN) 58- 884-7
----- Art Monk (WAS) 56- 894-6

1982 Pro Bowl Roster
Charlie Brown (WAS) 32- 690-8
Dwight Clark (SFO) 60- 913-5
John Jefferson (GNB) 27- 452-0
James Lofton (GNB) 35- 696-4
----- Art Monk (WAS) 35- 447-1

1988 Pro Bowl Roster
Anthony Carter (MIN) 72-1225-6
Henry Ellard (LAR) 86-1414-10
Eric Martin (NOR) 85-1083-7
Jerry Rice (SFO) 64-1306-9
JT Smith (PHO) 83- 986-5
John Taylor (SFO) 14- 425-2
----- Art Monk (WAS) 72- 946-5

1989 Pro Bowl Roster
Mark Carrier (TAM) 86-1422-9
Henry Ellard (LAR) 70-1382-8
Jerry Rice (SFO) 82-1483-17
Sterling Sharpe(GRB) 90-1423-12
John Taylor (SFO) 60-1077-10
----- Art Monk (WAS) 86-1186-8

So in 1981 and 1982 it could be argued that as a young WR he didn't have the name rcognition as Ahmad Rashad and Jefferson. Still the point could be argued that he deserved tobe in based upon his play.

In 1988 and 1989 someone really needs to explain to me how in 1988 JT Smith (with inferior YPC) and John Taylor ( with INFERIOR #'s) gets in the Pro Bowl while Monk is kept out. And in 1989 Taylor (with mostly inferior #'s) gets the nod again. I thought being the #2 on your team was bad (at least thats what the HOF committee tells us about Monk not being the feared WR on his team), yet the guy playing opposite Jerry Rice got in with inferior #'s to Monk two years in a row??? What gives ???

So you can see why the Pro Bowl should have no bearing on HOF selection. It is a popularity contest. Nothing more.

Another roadblock the Sportwriters like to throw up is that he disappeared in the playoffs.

Really??

Look at the video at the end of this post and you'll see this is not true.

But lets look at something - Thurman Thomas was voted into the HOF on this ballot.

Anyone remember the SuperBowl in January 1992 between Washington and Buffalo...

Thomas ran for 13 yards on 10 carries.

All Monk did was rack up 113 yards receiving on 7 receptions. And his play helped the team win the game.

Yeah... nice disappearing act Art.

And yet Thomas gets voted in ??

If you don't want to listen to me - then listen to some of the people who played with him and against him.

Joe Thiesmann recently spoke about Monk where he said the following;

"Art was always the guy I looked for when we were in trouble."

Theismann went further to say;

"Art bailed me out of more jams...The year he caught 106 a lot of people forget that in the last game against St. Louis, which we had to win to make the playoffs, Art caught 11 passes (for 136 yards). And he made the biggest play of the game on fourth and-20. Art got 21 (and the Redskins won 29-27)."

Ronnie Lott, HOF inductee;

"Art Monk was an example for Jerry Rice. That's what Jerry always told me."
"There's nothing negative to say. He has the numbers, the catches, the championships."
"You have a Hall of Fame for all it represents. I know he represents all that it's about. Integrity, love and passion for the game, community, what he gave back. Look how he conducted himself. Nobody I know deserves it more."

Bill Polian, President Indianapolis Colts

"I believe he's a Hall of Famer. I was a pro scout when he was playing, so it was my job to know who those guys were. I would put Art in that category, but apparently there are a lot of Hall of Fame voters who don't feel Art Monk was in that category. It's hard for me to believe they ever saw him play."

But the best quote comes from another Sportswriter named Thom Loverro ( who writes for the Washington Times)

Thomas Loverro,Washington Times;

"He embodied the old school, and for that alone he should be enshrined so that when a father takes his son through the Hall of Fame, he can say, "Son, here is a man who once caught 106 passes in a season when no one was catching 100 passes. Here was a man who caught a pass in 183 straight games. And not once did he ever pull a cell phone out to make a call after any of those catches."

Judge for yourself on this video. Until Monk is on the HOF it will be forever the Hall of Shame.

http://www.redskinsdb.com/resources/Monk4theHall.wmv

If you objectively look at the facts presented and watch how Monk played the game in this video (which is by no means all of his highlights) I cannot understand how anyone could say he is not deserving.

P.S. - one other point to make - and its made by one of the best sports broadcasters on the radio today (Steve Czaban). Here http://czabe.com/daily/archives/2007/02/index.html he writes this ;

the 1970’s Lions (no playoff wins) have 3 HOFers, the 70’s Cardinals (no playoff wins) have 4 HOFers, and yet the 80s/90s Redskins with FOUR FREAKING SUPERBOWLS (with 3 Lombardi trophies) have just John Riggins and Joe Gibbs.

The Hogs deserve to be in the HOF, Grimm and Jacoby more than the others but they all should be given their shot. Yet they are repeatedly passed over along with other teammates who won 3 Superbowls and went to a 4th while consistently making the playoffs in the 80's and early 90's.

The anti-Redskins bias of the HOF committee stinks to high heaven.

P.P.S. - While I detest Irvin personally - I do think his on-field #'s were good enough to warrant HOF selection. I just think Monk should've made it in before he did. And Irvin agrees with me.

Peyton
It's about time. When my 'boys couldn't go to the Super Bowl, I just hoped that the patriots would be put out. When San Diego BLEW the game (interception, 4th down and run back which is fumbled) then it was up to Peyton and the Colts.

Everyone that follows sports knows the story. Peyton can't win the big game, will never go to the Super Bowl, etc. Brady, 12-1 in the playoffs, Mr. Comeback, Mr. Untouchable, etc.

It was a great game. Even watching it split-screen while my daughter watched Spongebob Squarepants (no joke). Early it's 21-3 pats after Peyton throws a pick-6, most think game over. But not this time. Patiently the colts offense found a rhythm and the defense did just enough to slow the Brady-machine. Congrats to Peyton and the Indianapolis Colts.

Manning finally wins big one, leads Colts to Super Bowl

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- A comeback, a drive, a legacy. And yes -- finally -- Peyton Manning gets his Super Bowl trip, too.

Football's most prolific quarterback put on a show for the ages Sunday, rallying the Indianapolis Colts from 18 points down and driving them 80 yards for the winning score in a wildly entertaining 38-34 victory over the New England Patriots.

In his nine years in the league, Manning has never played in a game like this AFC championship contest. He threw for 349 yards and one touchdown and brought his team back from a 21-3 deficit. (link)

I knew for a fact that Indy would win this game after I read this post recently at TownHall: (link) Thanks for the help Dean :)

Florida Gators
The University of Florida. National Champions in football and basketball same academic year (first time in D-1 history). My top 5 after this: Florida #1, USC #2, LSU #3, Boise St. #4, Wisconsin #5.

Chris Leak
(Jason Parkhurst/US PRESSWIRE)
Chris Leak was nearly perfect early as the Gators built their lead.
Gate-R Done
Ohio State started the night off with a bang but it was Florida which fired off the most rounds. The Gators routed the Buckeyes 41-14, claiming the BCS title. Box Score
This game was never close. OSU looked like Notre Dame did against LSU in the Sugar. Troy Smith was on the run for the whole night (he ended with 35 passing yards and -25 rushing yards I think) and the OSU offense looked like it had taken 2 years off, instead of simply 51 days.

Florida's offense, led by Chris Leak (with assists by Tim Teabow) was unstoppable for most of the night. When the Buckeyes managed to stop Leak and Co. the Gator defense put a stop to any hopes of a comeback.
