I never met the man. From every (I mean EVERY) account I have read or heard of this man, he was a saint. Players said that he always had time to help them. Would always lend an ear when needed. Coaches talked about how much they counted on his advice. Everyone called him their friend.
He spent 48 seasons as the UK Basketball equipment manager. For someone to have the same job for 48 years is extremely rare. He served under every UK Men's Basketball coach since Adolph Rupp. He will be missed and every UK fan mourns his passing. I hope his family is comforted by the knowledge that a nation of Wildcat fans share their pain.

The main problem (other than safety and a dome is the best place to be if it is indeed a tornado and not just winds) is that the tournament HAS to be done at a certain time. They are not going to move the NCAA tournament back to account for this so they will have to finish here or move if the building is not secure (there was some 'debris' falling).
Information from ESPN and the AP was not used in this report. But I will link the news at ESPN since they have it too :)
Going out tonight, hopefully I'll have fun :)

posted by Lord Nazh @ 20:53 | View blog reactionsBillie Gillispie and Bruce Pearl were named SEC Co-Coach of the Year. Both coaches had a great year. A lot of Kentucky fans were writing off Gillispie during the first part of this season. However, once the team came together things really turned around. UK ended regular season conference play with a record of 12-4. They now have a first round bye in the SEC Tourney and will most likely make a 17 consecutive appearance to the NCAA National Championship Tournament.
The Vols were ranked #1 for their first time ever. They also won their first regular season SEC Championship in just over 40 years. They also stand (in my opinion) the best chance at winning the SEC Tournament Championship.

He was right about the game -- and maybe Florida's season.Smith scored 23 points, Chris Lofton added 21 and No. 4 Tennessee overcame a 16-point deficit to beat the Gators 89-86 on Wednesday night.
They passed their record for most wins in a season (26 was the most) and still have 1 regular season game left (then the SEC tourney and the NCAA). Great year for Pearl and the squad no matter how it turns out.

Until the second half. UK never did lay down and let a very tough Volunteer squad walk over them. Tennessee went cold and allowed UK to make a comeback, take the lead and hang onto a HUGE win in the SEC.
66 - 72 UK FTW!!!
I honestly didn't expect UK to play them close. Tennessee is a very good ball team. UK has not had a good season to say the least. However, since they started SEC play they have been a completely different team. They are hustling, fighting, and WANTING TO WIN. I am encouraged more and more when I see them playing like they have been since the start of 2008. They survived a previously unbeaten Vanderbilt in 2 overtimes. They lost a close game to Mississippi State. And an overtime loss to Florida. Then this big win against Tennessee.
Folks we are starting to see what Gillispie has been trying to tell us was coming. Their record now is 8- 9 overall and 2-2 in the SEC. Go Cats!

Oden lost for season
September 13, 2007
Portland Trail Blazers center Greg Oden, the No. 1 pick in the 2007 NBA draft, will miss the 2007-08 season after undergoing microfracture surgery Thursday, two league sources told Yahoo! Sports.
Oden, a 7-footer from Ohio State, was found to have torn cartilage during exploratory surgery on his right knee and was operated on by team doctor Don Roberts in Vancouver, Wash. Most microfracture surgeries require eight months to a year for recovery.
"Greg had an arthroscopy and a microfracture surgery today," Roberts said in a Blazers statement. "He was found to have articular cartilage damage in his right knee. The area of injury was not large and we were able to treat it with microfracture, which stimulates the growth of cartilage.
"There are things about this that are positive for Greg. First of all, he is young. The area where the damage was is small and the rest of his knee looked normal. All those are good signs for a complete recovery." [link]
Now it looks like they will be without him anyway, guess we know who'll be the favorite for rookie of the year now. It does look like Oden will recover and be able to play next season.

I watched most of these games (I should have been sleeping) and the Tenn./Virginia game was a classic. Of course I'm a big UT fan, but it would have been a classic regardless. Two teams battling to make it (hot shooting, timely defense and free throws) with one eventually having to take a bow.
The rest of the games had their moments, but most were decided long before the final buzzer. Florida showed it is still the team to beat. Turning up the offense and defense seemingly at will in the 2nd half against a game Purdue squad. UNLV showed that Wisconsin may have had a good year, but they aren't that good of a team. (Show of hands for all the people that thought Wisconsin was a final four or championship team... ok the guy in the back can leave). Southern Illinois stifled Virginia Tech all day, of course after what Illinois did to them, this is what happens when you play a team with good defense that actually has an offense. Virginia Tech should have been a 7-seed.
The 'experts' all thought Winthrop would be playing in the Sweet 16 after today, I wonder if any of them have seen Oregon play this year? A very fast team with size that can play a little defense against a 'feel-good' story and a natural-born star from New Zealand, it's easy to see how they missed this one. I thought the Nevada-Memphis game would be good (up-and-down scoring, loose defense; but with full-court presses) and for most of the game it was good. It was alot like the Tenn./Virginia game without the suspense at the end. Memphis just had too much for the senior-laden Nevada squad. Kentucky upset me. Here's a good shooting team with a monster inside force (Morris) who thinks it's a 3-point team with a great transition defense. Kansas exposed Kentucky for what it really was.
Finally the man-child. Kevin Durant is (almost) everyone's POY in college basketball this year (with votes going to Oden at OSU also) and expected to be the #1 or #2 pick in next year's NBA draft. He is awesome, but Texas finally figured out that this is a TEAM sport. At least that is what they should take away from the USC vs Durant game today.

Whatever it was, it worked. UT dominated the game, at one point were up 25 and if they could hit some free throws (20-31 I believe) they'd have walked out early. As it was, the gators went down 10 and saw their stock in the NCAA's slip. Tennessee's of course will go up and if they can close out on the road against Georgia this weekend, win at least one in the SEC tourney, then they may look at a 5 seed.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Chris Lofton scored 21 points, and Tennessee pulled away from No. 5 Florida in the first half and held on for an 86-76 victory Tuesday night.
The Gators (25-5, 12-3 Southeastern Conference) continued a troubling trend for the defending national champions, who have lost three of four after a 17-game winning streak. Their chances for a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament are slipping away after easily wrapping up the SEC regular-season title last week.
But this was the Volunteers' night.
With Lady Vols coach Pat Summitt dressing as a cheerleader and singing "Rocky Top" and Super Bowl MVP Peyton Manning watching his alma mater, Tennessee (21-9, 9-6) finished the season 16-0 at home. (link)

KIRKUK, Iraq — An Iraqi army brigade based in the northern Kurdish region is undergoing intensive training in urban combat and will be dispatched to Baghdad as part of a new joint U.S.-Iraqi security drive in the sprawling and violence-ridden city, the commander said Saturday.
The brigade is one of two coming from the Kurdish region and a third brigade will come from southern Iraq. The second Kurdish brigade will come from the northern city of Sulaimaniyah.
"We will head to Baghdad soon. We have 3,000 soldiers who are currently undergoing intensive training especially in urban combat and how the army should act inside a city," said Brig. Gen. Nazir Assem Korran, commander of the 1st Infantry Brigade, 2nd Division of the Iraqi army that is based in the city of Irbil.
Click here for more news on Iraq.
Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, in his first comments on the new Bush administration plan for restoring security in Baghdad, said the proposal was "identical to our strategy and intentions."
Al-Maliki, however, continued to avoid naming the Mahdi Army Shiite militia of one of his key supporters as a target of the military operations to cleanse the capital of Sunni insurgents and Shiite militia gunmen and death squads.(link)
As long as the Iraqi government wants us there and W is in the whitehouse, we'll be there. Democrats on Capitol Hill won't pull funding and risk votes in '08 (just look at their promises vs their actions, they are looking ahead, not worrying about today). So you're only chance to end this war early is to get the Iraqi government to say it's over.

Tennessee men did beat OK state tonite in hoops (OK State was undefeated and 14/15 in the polls) so it was a good win for them (it was in Nashville, so technically a 'neutral-court' win) and will certainly look good in March when it's time to pick teams for the tournament.
My Cowboys clinched a playoff birth with their win Saturday night and can clinch the division with a win against Philly on Christmas day. Hopefully their defense can step up and shut Garcia down and make this game over quicker than the last one.
Now I'm off to check the news in the world (blogosphere anyway) and maybe post some more. But I doubt it.
