It has taken more than 90 days, 270 witnesses and a bill of £10 million to slay the obsessive conspiracy theories of one man. And in the end yesterday, a jury discarded the soft option of accidental death and placed much of the blame for the deaths of Diana, Princess of Wales, and Dodi Fayed on the shoulders of one of Mohamed Al Fayed’s own employees.

The Princess and Dodi were unlawfully killed by a combination of their drunk driver, Henri Paul, and the paparazzi who were chasing their car, the jury at their inquests decided.

It was a disastrous outcome for the owner of Harrods, whose allegations of a murder plot masterminded by the Duke of Edinburgh were rejected decisively by the coroner for complete lack of evidence. It was a damning indictment, too, of the pursuing photographers who must accept an equal share of the blame. Even the dead do not escape censure. The couple might have been alive today, the jury decided unanimously, had they been wearing their seatbelts.

Now maybe this poor woman can finally rest. The obsession over her death (and life) rivals that of Elvis at times over here (in the south especially) and I doubt this inquest will change the minds of some who continue to look for conspiracies wherever they can.

Britain Surrenders
I'm sure all of my Brit friends have had a bad day if they've kept abreast at the news. No one I've talked to actually believed that Britain would actually sign the EU Treaty, but they have done it. The EU is becoming a country, slowly but surely; this is the latest step in depriving the citizens of the countries of Europe of their ability to govern their lands.
FOREIGN Secretary David Miliband signed the hated EU treaty - hours before Prime Minister Gordon Brown arrived in Lisbon.

Due to the PM's delayed arrival, Mr Miliband was the only foreign minister to attend the televised ceremony alone, amid a stream of prime ministers and presidents from the other 26 EU states.

Mr Brown also later signed the document in a low key ceremony.

The news will be a blow to the country's voters - The Sun's EU petition has received 28,000 votes saying no to the Treaty.

Today’s ceremony took place in the beautiful surroundings of Lisbon's 500-year-old Jeronimos Monastery.
[snip]
The warning was issued to the PM last night as he prepared to wave the white flag over our right to make our own laws.

It emerged tens of thousands of foreigners facing the boot from the UK will be winners.

They will get new rights to overturn decisions by Britain’s Immigration and Asylum Tribunal.

It means failed asylum seekers will be free to take their cases to the European Court of Justice in Strasbourg — giving the final say to unelected EU judges.
The Sun
As I said, first step. Now that the countries of Europe have NO border control, there basically are no borders.

Terrorists get theirs
5 Rats in a Hole:

LONDON — A judge sentenced five men to life in prison Monday for plotting to attack targets in London, including a popular nightclub, power plants and shopping mall, with bombs made from a half-ton stockpile of fertilizer.

The trial for the first time exposed connections between the defendants and the deadly 2005 Al Qaeda-linked attack on the city's transit system.

Details kept secret to ensure a fair trial showed that counterterrorism agents tracking the five men had also stumbled onto the transit plotters. And despite disturbing signs that the transit plot was in the works, the agents failed to piece them together in time to prevent the July 7, 2005 bombings that killed 52 people, testimony and official briefings during the trial showed.

The revelations are at odds with statements by Tony Blair's government after the 2005 attack. Senior ministers, who a month earlier had lowered the country's alert status, said the 2005 attack was unexpected and the perpetrators unknown.

Omar Khyam was found guilty of conspiracy to cause explosions made from a chemical fertilizer that could endanger life. Also found guilty were Anthony Garcia, Jawad Akbar, Waheed Mahmood and Alahuddin Amin. (link)

Nice to see these guys will be put away for a very long time (not sure on the parole requirements in the UK) but notable that the AP article spends over half its time talking about what the British government didn't do, instead of what it did.

Hindsight is always 20/20 and you can always say should have or could have after the fact. The news of this trial and sentence needs to focus on the 'dids' not the 'did nots'.

Home
Well I'm finally home so maybe tonight or tomorrow I can get back to 'regular' blogging. (heh)

Seems the Democrat(ic) party is in a big hurry to lose a war (hell any war) and Bush is actually standing up to them (surprise).

Nancy Pelosi (not one to jump in the middle of 'foreign affairs' aka the Iran hostage situation) tries to defend her trip to Syria.

And since when does the Greatest Island Nation in History(TM) decide to HOPE for the release of their military men/women?

Indian nurses face racist attack in UK

London, ians:
Nurses from India working in hospitals in northern Liverpool have recently been attacked by racist thugs, leaving them terrified to move out of their flats, according to reports from Liverpool.

Nurses from India working in hospitals in northern Liverpool have recently been attacked by racist thugs, leaving them terrified to move out of their flats, according to reports from Liverpool.

Four blocks of flats in Falconhall Road, Fazakerley, where the nurses recruited by the National Health Service reside, have been attacked. The racist abuse hurled at the nurses is reportedly getting worse.

Minu Subash, a nurse working at the Fazakerley hospital, was quoted as saying: “We are really afraid to go out at night because of young boys roaming around outside. I have stopped them trying to take my car and they tried to smash their way into a flat through the window. “When you say anything to them or chase them away, you get ‘Paki this’ and ‘Paki that’. It is all the time.” (link)
The article never tells who the suspected youths are, no background at all. Usually when the press won't identify 'youths' they are usually muslim (might not be true in this case, but it usually is). I wonder if these women are being targetted more for being from India, or not wearing proper clothing?

Anyone seen Murtha?
Somali Islamists vow to fight on as government holds talks with clans

· Protests in Mogadishu at role of Ethiopian forces
· Reliance on warlords weakens administration

Xan Rice in Nairobi
Saturday December 30, 2006
The Guardian

Somali Islamist leaders vowed yesterday to continue fighting against pro-government forces yesterday even as Ethiopian MiG fighter jets buzzed over Kismayo, their last stronghold.

The Islamists fled from Mogadishu, 260 miles north of Kismayo, on Thursday after being surrounded by Ethiopian troops and fighters loyal to the Somali government. Hassan Dahir Aweys and Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, the top two Islamist leaders, were joined in the southern port city by several thousand militiamen and scores of "technicals" - pick-up trucks with machine guns mounted on the back. (link)

After running as fast as they could from Mogadishu, the Islamists claim they will not leave Somalia and will fight to the end. Of course, they said that before they fled the capital too, so we'll have to see. It's amazing what an army can do to the recruited rabble of terrorists groups when giving the free reign to do the job. If the Islamists fight as hard as they have so far, look for a free Somalia before the month is out.
