Surgery update Thanks for all who were praying for my Mom. Her surgery went well and the surgeon said that he was "very pleased" with the results. They were able to bring her spine back into a more normal curvature. The surgery took just about 8 hours. She is recovering now. She will have pretty bad pain for the next several days. But that was explained pre-op and is to be expected. She is on Morphine but unfortunately that conflicts with her Parkinson's meds and causes problems with her blood pressure. They are keeping a close eye on her.

Update Spend most of my time (at home) hanging out with the neighbors (ala Friends) or playing games (WoW) if I'm bored and no one's home. Other than that, it's reading or spending time with lil bit when she's there.

I still visit webisites, make a comment or two and whatever, but there's no there there. So this is my official notice to all that I'm done.

At least until the neighbors move or whatever. If the situation at the new place becomes the same as the old one (bored, lonely, etc.) then I'll be back with a vengence (heh).

I'll keep the blog here of course (got my links) and still visit; but except for occasional posts about something or other; consider me finito.

The co-bloggers can of course post (not that many do; except Court of course) but you shouldn't expect anything (much) from me for a good bit.

Surgery Tomorrow, at oh-dark thirty in the morning, my Mom is going to have elective back surgery. Over the last several years she has had progressively worsening scoliosis. The goal of this surgery is to remove some of the disks in her spinal column and straighten her back out some. It will not correct her scoliosis but it will take some of the curvature out and help her to stand more erect. This surgery is estimated at 8 hours. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers.

Climate Porn Are there still people that believe the 'man-made' climate change horseshit?

I DEVOTED six years to carbon accounting, building models for the Australian Greenhouse Office. I am the rocket scientist who wrote the carbon accounting model (FullCAM) that measures Australia's compliance with the Kyoto Protocol, in the land use change and forestry sector.

FullCAM models carbon flows in plants, mulch, debris, soils and agricultural products, using inputs such as climate data, plant physiology and satellite data. I've been following the global warming debate closely for years.

When I started that job in 1999 the evidence that carbon emissions caused global warming seemed pretty good: CO2 is a greenhouse gas, the old ice core data, no other suspects.

The evidence was not conclusive, but why wait until we were certain when it appeared we needed to act quickly? Soon government and the scientific community were working together and lots of science research jobs were created. We scientists had political support, the ear of government, big budgets, and we felt fairly important and useful (well, I did anyway). It was great. We were working to save the planet.

DC City Council is at it again The Washington Times

D.C. Mayor Adrian M. Fenty on Monday announced the proposed emergency legislation, which allows guns to be registered for self-defense in the home, requires that a ballistic record be kept on a registered gun, clarifies safe-storage requirements and makes clear that a "carry" license is not required to have guns in the home.

City officials said the legislation will "clarify that firearms in the home must be stored unloaded and either disassembled (or) secured with a trigger lock, gun safe or similar device," with an exception made for a firearm used against a "reasonably-perceived threat" of immediate harm to a person within a registered gun owner's home.

These people just simply do not get it. What will it take for them to understand. Hopefully one of these days DC will elect a gun friendly City Council & Mayor.

And it really hits home. Great Satan truly faces a despicable enemy.

There are moments that throw the nature of America's enemies into the sharpest possible relief.

One such moment came this week, as the Army revealed that it had identified the remains of two US soldiers taken captive in Iraq.

Pfc. Byron Fouty, 19, and Queens-born Sgt. Alex Jimenez, 25, were captured last May after heavy fighting in Iraq's then-explosive Sunni Triangle.

The body of a third captured GI, Pfc. Joseph Anzack Jr., was found not long afterward - but Jimenez and Fouty's families held out hope for their return.

Until now.

It's the smallest of comforts that the country may now never know what, precisely, the pair endured in captivity.

Captured Americans in Iraq have been subject to all means of torture - including public beheading - in the furtherance of militants' sick propaganda aims.

Such brutality turned Iraqis against al Qaeda en masse - as soon as American resolve gave them the chance.

It also gives lie to the tired cliché that America somehow loses its "moral standing" by, say, keeping terrorists locked up at Gitmo.

That facility, of course, has been the subject of dozens of front-page New York Times profiles - alleging everything from stressful interrogation techniques to the violation of prisoners' religious sensibilities.

(This is the same paper, mind you, that devoted barely eight Associated Press paragraphs - on Page B6 - to the discovery of Jimenez and Fouty's remains.)

Left unsaid is that detainees - despite, as non-uniformed combatants, having no standing under the laws of civilized warfare - are given free access to medical care and religious accoutrements.

Not to mention, freedom to return to the battlefield - and kill Americans - provided there's insufficient evidence that they intend to do so.

Heck of a way to run a war, huh?

Actually, it speaks to the night-and-day difference in honor and decency between America and her enemies - a difference that Sgt. Jimenez and Pfc. Fouty gave their lives to defend.

WASHINGTON - Tony Snow, a conservative writer and commentator who cheerfully sparred with reporters in the White House briefing room during a stint as President Bush's press secretary, died Saturday of colon cancer. He was 53.

"America has lost a devoted public servant and a man of character," President Bush said in a statement from Camp David, where he was spending the weekend. "It was a joy to watch Tony at the podium each day. He brought wit, grace, and a great love of country to his work."

Snow, who served as the first host of the television news program "Fox News Sunday" from 1996 to 2003, would later say that in the Bush administration he was enjoying "the most exciting, intellectually aerobic job I'm ever going to have."

Yes it's the AP, sue me; this was a great man.

Yet another tragedy was splashed across the local paper casually dropped on the glass tabletop with the inlaid design, in the cafe I strolled down to on Sunday morning.
Here was I, white, clean shaven, dressed as smartly as any local, sipping on my coffee, just as the scattering of others also were who’d stayed in the city rather than go to the beach or to their country houses. Did I care?
Well yes.
The people in the news are the clandestini, the boat people who, desperate to escape the senseless poverty and violence of the North African Muslim regimes, prefer to chant “Sicilia or Paradise”, the latter their watery destination should they fail, which they generally do. And yet this does not dissuade them from trying.
The Italian, the Sicilian attitude, is a tad kindlier than, say, in Germany or France. There is a grudging recognition down this way that we are all struggling to make ends meet and to find some sort of life in the process.
And what of me, silently finishing the first cappuccino? I’m also by no means out of the woods, off the boat to mix metaphors. It is quite possibile that a stroke of the pen will end my stay once again. So you’ll perhaps forgive a slight edge to my interest in the boat people.
The other day for the first time, I saw one of the survivors emerge from the kitchen of a cafe and pick some leaves from a tree, then merge back into her sanctuary. She was working, possibly long hours. She had every intention of integrating and trying to find acceptance in a very closed community.
Contrast this with the aliens allowed in on study visas in Britain who then kick up merry hell at the end of their time. Contrast it with the proliferation of Mosques and the like, led by people who then have the temerity to demand their own system of justice, Sharia Law.
Oh yes?
And what does the head of the UK police say? Get knotted? You will conform to British law whilst in this country? Not a bit of it. He says there is a place for Sharia Law in Britain’s legal system. Was there a place for Jewish Law in previous years? Bahai Law? Was there a Buddhist system of justice recognized by the Crown?
Sorry to be so grumpy but why the hell should Sharia Law be picked out of the air and favoured by the British police and justice system?
Every one of you knows the answer to that. Because these leaders are not socially agreeable, hard-working immigrants, trying to integrate with British society. They are trouble makers trying to impose an alien system on someone else’s country.
Ours.
Now if I’d written that about the Bahai, about the Buddhists, there’d have barely been more than a murmur. So why the howls of rage from this community, insistent on no offence being given them?
Look.
Any person of any race, religion or color is generally welcome to another land, as long as the clear intention is to integrate and conform to the law and social mores of that country.
Here in Italy, it is quite clear – to have any intention of remaining, one learns the language, the customs, the traditions of the place, mixes with the local people, rather than hiding away in a ghetto, contributing to the local economy and needing to be seen to be doing this.
One keeps one’s protestantism low key and visit the Catholic church, eating the local cuisine – not all the time but much of the time, transmitting one’s own culture to the locals as and when they wish to know of it.
Having now travelled from land to land, this appears fundamental, something that should simply be taken as read.
Not in my homeland, it seems.

Doing the Right Thing

He's a criminal, but he "did the right thing" when it mattered - alerting cops to what he feared was a terror plot the day before the Fourth of July.

At about 5 p.m. yesterday, an unidentified thief with a police record broke into a red van that had been parked at 53rd Street and Second Avenue in Brooklyn's Sunset Park for about a month, a source told The Post.

He was stunned when he looked inside - it was filled with gas cans and Styrofoam cups containing a mysterious white substance with protruding wires and switches.

The street is lined with brownstones, and there's a ballet studio and a small Muslim school. So he drove the van 15 blocks to 37th Street and parked it at a desolate waterfront location behind the Costco store and next to some little-used piers.

If Santa ever set up his Christmas grotto in a war zone, it might look something like this.

Hundreds of men and women, many of them armed, line up in a marble hall inside one of Saddam Hussein's former palaces, waiting patiently for more than half an hour for their hero to turn up.

The object of so much adulation is General David Petraeus, the 55-year-old commander of US and allied forces in Iraq. General Petraeus, widely credited with the military strategy that has clawed Iraq back from civil war to a semblance of stability, is in such demand for photographs that his aides have had to organise special mass photo-ops every six weeks inside the Green Zone and at the other huge US base at Baghdad airport.

“He's a real leader at a great time,” said Master Sergeant John Fife of the US Air Force, who had brought a group of comrades and local Iraqi staff across the vast fortified compound for the chance to have their picture taken with the general, who devised Iraq's counter-insurgency strategy.

Seems not everyone goes for the 'Wanted' star quite as much as the star of the War on Terror. I'd love to meet and greet with both of them, but the good General has done a lot more for the world than Jolie has (even though she's hot).

Mottaki Fareed Zakaria just Iviewed Iran's Foreign Minister - the semi creepy (un) Honourable (?)Manouchehr Mottaki for his TV show "GPS" on some cable channel and it was a hoot!

Mottaki - as underground Persian Cat 'Rooz' reveals in a dossier is one of the mullahs most precious minions.

"Mottaki joined the Foreign Ministry at a time when members of the Islamic Students Association were rapidly replacing diplomats and even experts at the ministry. After completing his first assembly term, Mottaki joined the ministry and was appointed director of the ministry's seventh bureau in 1984.

A year later, in 1985, Mottaki was appointed as Iran's ambassador to Turkey. At that time, Turkey was a desired destination for many Iranians who belonged to opposition groups and were fleeing either to Europe or Iraq through Turkey.

During Mottaki's tenure, many of the Islamic Republic's dissidents were killed across Turkey, prompting Turkish officials to accuse Mottaki of instigating instability and issuing him a persona non grata status, which meant he had to leave the country within 24 hours."

Fareed tried verbally fencing with the Fo Min and it was like watching a waltz or maybe a wrestling match. Subtle dances and feints that ultimately resolved little.
